When work needs another body

An NPR article about coconut harvesters in Thailand cites a number that stays with you: a male macaque can reach 1,600 coconuts a day, a female 600, and a human about 80. From there, the map opens: humans have built jobs around the smell, sonar, hooves, wings, blood, and instincts of other species.

The work types repeat

The species change, but the pattern returns: humans look for bodies that turn a physical limit into executable work.

Work done by smell

Dogs, rats, pigs, and some bees find things people miss: explosives, disease, truffles, or products hidden in luggage.

Work underwater

Cormorants, otters, dolphins, and sea lions do what people do badly in water: search, push, signal, recover.

Traction, terrain, slope

Oxen, buffalo, donkeys, camels, reindeer, elephants, llamas, and goats appear where roads, mud, snow, heat, or machine cost change the calculation.

When the animal makes the thing

Bees pollinate, silkworms spin, larvae clean wounds, leeches drain blood, and horseshoe crabs entered contamination testing.
